Stéphane Symons

At the still point of the turning world. Kan kunst de wereld redden? (Lessen voor de XXIe eeuw)

“I don't think that artists have any more obligation than anyone else. I think everyone has an obligation and everyone has different ways they can contribute.” - Patti Smith

In his lecture for the XXIst century, Prof Stéphane Symons elaborates from his philosophical background on the question of what role art can take on today. How does art shape the experience of ourselves and what transcends us? Can art save the world? Does art demonstrate the power of change; an alternative to 'there is no alternative'?

Stéphane Symons is a cultural and art philosopher at the Higher Institute of Philosophy. His field of research is continental philosophy. His most recent book publication is 'Beauty' (LannooCampus, Junior College series, 2023).

This lecture (in Dutch) is part of Lessons for the 21st century. Respondent: Hilde Van Gelder.
