Migration is inherent to the human species. People have always moved to other areas, regions and even continents. Human migration has made the world into what it is today. It is a powerful force that shapes new societies. A thousand years ago, not a single Turk was living in Istanbul (then called Byzantium) and the Danish were in power in the United Kingdom. A bit more than 500 years ago, only native populations lived in what is now the United States of America, and Spain was largely Islamic. Migration is a power that shapes states and societies and it is therefore often considered as threatening. For some, migration is frightening, for others, it is a source of inspiration. In his lecture, Johan Wets addresses the dynamics of human migration and how they will continue to shape society in the future.
