Lecture Artefact
Alia Syed

Artist talk

Alia Syed is an experimental filmmaker and visual artist who lives and works in London and Glasgow. In the Artefact exhibition Parallel Crossings she will present Points of Departure. In this film, she uses images from the BBC archives bringing a collective past together with personal memories in order to break through the normative and culturally dominant visual identity of Glasgow’s city landscape, injecting it with a Scottish-Asian presence. Syed’s practise as a filmmaker constitutes ongoing research, exploring the nature and role of language in intercultural communication. This involves a focus on borders and boundaries, translation and the trans-cultured self. In her artist talk, Syed will speak about her practice through a selection of film fragments.
